RUMFORD – Selectmen will deal with a variety of issues when they meet Thursday, ranging from an expected agreement that will allow construction of a temporary building to an update on work being done at Black Mountain.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the conference room of the Municipal Building.

Town Manager Robert Welch said Rumford has reached an agreement with MeadWestvaco Corp. that would allow a portion of the municipal parking lot on River Street to be used for a temporary building for housing a ladder truck.

The Rumford Fire Department recently acquired a ladder truck to replace an old one that did not pass inspection. The truck, however, is too large to fit into the Congress Street fire station.

Roger Arsenault will update the board on improvements being made at Black Mountain since it was purchased by the Maine Winter Sports Center.

A discussion will also take place regarding the perceived lack of parking spaces in the downtown section that encompasses Congress, Exchange, Canal, River, Hartford and Lowell streets and two public lots. Welch said he conducted a survey that showed 221 spaces available for two-hour parking, 107 for all day parking and 58 24-hour parking spaces.

The issue arose at the board’s last meeting when some said they believe a major portion of the business district is being transformed into a service area. Some businesses have complained that insufficient parking exists for their clients.

The board will also set fees for property owners who must go through a site plan review with the Planning Board during the development process. The new law was passed at last June’s annual town meeting.

Other items include a possible update on grant applications and action on two liquor license and amusement permits.
