RUMFORD – A fifth group of displaced workers and others are signed up to begin a course in the precision metal trades.
Diane Dostie, Central Maine Community College’s liaison with the River Valley Technology Center board, said last week that several have signed up for the no-charge course, and a few openings still exist.
With classes offered at several sites in the River Valley area, students can complete the one-year certificate program in about nine months. This round of classes begins on Jan. 14.
Scholarships are available to assist students in completing an associate’s degree from the Maine Metal Products Association, as well, said Lisa Martin, director of the trade association.
“There are many options to become successful, through mentoring, tutoring and classes at Region 9,” Dostie said.
Students in the precision metal trades program will eventually take many of the required courses at the River Valley Technology Center, once the former bag mill in downtown Rumford is renovated. Work is under way on that project, with an expected completion date of late summer 2004.
Those interested in receiving metal trades training should contact the Maine Career Center, an organization that will help students become enrolled and tutored, if necessary. Its number is 364-3738.
Martin said jobs are plentiful in the metal trades industry.
