Most parents are happy with Poland Community School.

POLAND – Lots of parents want a full-day kindergarten and some want a tougher overall curriculum.

Those were some of the conclusions drawn from a survey of Poland Community School parents presented to the School Committee Wednesday night.

Carolyn Johnson, Poland Community School principal, told committee members the overwhelming majority of respondents were quite happy with the school.

Johnson said about 180 questionnaires were turned in.

There are 400 students at the school.

The survey asked such things as whether parents felt welcome in their child’s school, whether the school has a good learning environment, and whether parents respect the school’s teachers. On a scale of one to five, most of the results landed in the four range. The lowest category, whether parents felt students showed respect for other students, came in at 3.68. The question which received the highest score, not surprisingly, asked how well parents support their child’s learning at home.

The committee asked Johnson to look into the cost and space requirements of a full-day kindergarten and report back at next month’s meeting.

Although the request for a tougher curriculum at the elementary school wasn’t addressed at this meeting, middle school Assistant Principal Janet Jones told the committee that an honors program, known as the Honors Challenge, will be offered at the Bruce M. Whittier Middle School.

Jones said a pilot program will be initiated this year and by next year all eligible students will be able to participate in the accelerated courses.

She also told the committee that students had changed the school’s colors from blue and gold to blue and silver.

Committee Chairman Ike Levine noted there seemed to be an improvement in morale at the middle school. He gave much of the credit to Jones and thanked her for her efforts.

In other business, committee members approved a host of policies, including one that bans all types of weapons and knives on school grounds, including tool-type knives carried by adults.
