AUBURN – A Massachusetts man involved in a shooting incident on Knox Street last year is back in jail for violating his probation.
Nearly a year ago, Sharod Nunes, 25, was charged with attempted murder for allegedly beating and firing a gun at another man. On Thursday, he appeared in court to answer charges that he left the state without telling his probation officer and failed to submit DNA samples to the state.
Nunes admitted to the violations and was sentenced to another 18 months in prison.
His troubles in Maine began Dec. 30, 2002, when he was arrested after running from a melee on Knox Street.
Nunes and Anthony Jones of Roxbury, Mass., were accused of going to Knox Street to confront another man about a conflict over a girl.
After an argument, police said, Nunes handed a gun to Jones, and Jones fired the gun at the man. The bullet missed the victim and lodged in the wall above the doorway.
Then, according to court documents, Jones used the gun to beat the man. Nunes and Jones were arrested while trying to flee through the back of the tenement building, police said.
Both eventually pleaded guilty to reckless conduct. The attempted murder charges were dropped, in part because the prosecutors were not able to locate the victim.
Nunes was sentenced in March to two years in prison with all but 90 days suspended, followed by 18 months of probation.
According to court documents, he moved to Massachusetts shortly after getting out of prison without reporting the move to his probation officer. A warrant was immediately issued for his arrest, but police did not find him until he was charged in that state for possessing heroin and cocaine.
He served 57 days in a Massachusetts jail after pleading guilty to those charges, then he was sent back to Maine to deal with the charges of violating his probation.
Jones also has a warrant out for his arrest. It was issued after he stopped reporting to his probation officer.
