PORTLAND – Alfred D. “Fred” Auger, 74, of Glenhaven East, died Sunday morning, Dec. 7, at a nursing facility in Scarborough after a brief battle with cancer.

He was born in Lewiston the son of Leon and Diane Gagne Auger. He attended schools in Lewiston graduating from Lewiston High School in the class of 1947. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a flight mechanic from 1951 till his honorable discharge in 1955.

On Nov. 5, 1955 he would marry the former Anita Boucher in Lewiston. He worked for Trailways of New England for 24 years until his retirement in 1987. He would later work for the former S.D. Warren Paper Mill, now Sappa, until 1996. For the next eight years he was a driver for Big “A” Auto Parts in Westbrook until his retirement in 2002.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed golfing, gardening, and the Red Sox. He also loved to read and had a passion for history, but most of all he loved spending time with his family and friends.

Besides his wife of 48 years of Portland, he leaves: three sons, Gary L. and his wife Tomi of Gorham, Steve P. and his wife April of Harrison, and Kevin M., of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; a brother, Louis Auger of Auburn; and his three grandaughters, Jade, Rebecca, and Nicole.

He is predeceased by three Brothers, Leon, Oscar and Gerry, and a sister, Florence.
