JAY – Voters have a chance Tuesday to consider renovating the town and bus garages and paying off a school food service deficit.

The special town meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Jay Middle School cafeteria.

On the warrant is a $357,000 proposal to renovate the Highway Department garage and the School Department garage to meet state and federal mandates.

The proposal calls for building a 20-foot by 70-foot addition onto the front of the town garage to enable all town vehicles to fit in. As the building exists, some firetrucks and recycling and solid waste trucks have to be worked on outside.

The project also covers retroffitting the bus garage to act as a wash station for all town vehicles.

The proposal is expected to save money by shifting all mechanic work up to the town garage.

Voters are scheduled to decide if they want to transfer $235,500 from the town’s undesignated revenue for the project. The remaining $121,500 would come from town departments’ reserve funds and money the school saves for not hiring a mechanic to replace the one who is retiring in March.

The second money article voters face is transferring $55,689 from the school’s $332,00 unexpended fund balance to eliminate a food service deficit.

According to school Superintendent Robert Wall the food service program is not self-supporting.

Voters approved $82,955 in tax dollars in April for this year, but it still left a shortfall.

Selectmen, School Committee and Budget Committee members recommend “yes” votes on the articles.

Residents are also scheduled to consider several easements on property in town.
