The city has relocated its winter supplies to River Road.

LEWISTON – The public sand pile for driveways and walks has moved a few miles south to the city’s plowing operations center on River Road.

Public works Director Dave Jones said the city officially moved its public sand piles to the River Road operations center this fall. Residents can carry home 100 pounds, or two five-gallon buckets, per trip.

“What we don’t want is someone in a half-ton truck pulling up and filling their bed,” Jones said. “That makes it tough on the other residents.”

The operations center opened last year, but Jones said the city kept the public sand pile at the public works offices on Bartlett Street.

“We weren’t finished on River Road yet,” Jones said. “We still had some work to do on the site.”

Putting the public sand out on River Road is safer, Jones said.

“Before, it really was a safety hazard,” Jones said. “This has a lot more room for people to come and go easier. It’s much less congested.”

The move did catch a few residents by surprise this weekend, Jones said.

“We had some people stop in and ask, and we directed them off to River Road,” Jones said. “But now, we’re putting together a brochure with a map and directions so they can find it a little easier.”

The brochure should be available at the public works offices and at city hall, Jones said.
