FARMINGTON – A woman was taken to a Farmington hospital Sunday to be checked for smoke inhalation after a fire started in her kitchen.

About 17 Farmington firefighters responded to a fire at a duplex at Philbrick Road at 7:37 a.m., said Fire Rescue Chief Terry Bell.

A person in an apartment occupied by Carol Pillsbury had put something on the stove to cook and went into another room with members of the family, Bell said.

When someone smelled smoke, they found that the kitchen cabinets were on fire, Bell said.

Pillsbury’s daughter alerted everyone in both apartments to the fire, and the building was evacuated.

One of the residents in the other side of the duplex came over with a fire extinguisher and knocked down the flames, Bell said.

Bell had called out mutual aid but canceled it after arriving on the scene.

Pillsbury, who had been sleeping at the time, was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital to be checked for smoke inhalation, Bell said.

The duplex is owned by Lee Ireland of Industry,

Bell estimated there was at least $2,000 in damage done to a new stove, cupboards and ceiling, and there was smoke damage throughout the house.
