CARTHAGE – An old farmhouse received about $30,000 to $40,000 damage when an electrical fire broke out in the basement Sunday afternoon.

Between 50 and 75 firefighters from six departments responded to the Route 142 house, Carthage Fire Chief Ken Flagg said.

Jason Swett and his dog were home when the fire started, he said.

Swett, in his early 30s, was headed out the door when he decided to go back in to get his coat, Flagg said. When he did, he saw smoke and heard the fire down in the cellar, Flagg said.

He opened the door and saw fire, closed the door and called the Fire Department, Flagg said.

Water was shuttled about 1 miles to the scene from Webb River.

Responding with about eight trucks were firefighters from Carthage, Weld, Dixfield, West Peru, Mexico and Rumford.

Med-Care Ambulance also responded, Flagg said.

There were no injuries, he said.

The fire was out within two hours.

About 90 percent of the damage was contained to the basement, Flagg said, with the first and second floor receiving smoke damage.

Swett was insured, Flagg said, and is staying with his parents in Carthage.
