RUMFORD – The SAD 43 board plans to meet in a closed session Monday night to discuss an opportunity to acquire a land parcel and buildings.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, in the library of Mountain Valley High School.

Superintendent Jim Hodgkin said the district has been approached by an undisclosed landowner who has offered the land and buildings to the district.

“We need to do something quickly,” he said, without providing further details.

He said the land and buildings could fit into regionalization discussions with neighboring school districts. Hodgkin and the superintendents from SAD 21, SAD 44 and Peru have been meeting for the past couple of months to try to find ways to provide broader and less costly services.

Although he said he couldn’t disclose plans for the acquisition of the property, Hodgkin said the superintendents are looking into more centrally located areas for such things as a common bus garage, alternative education program and adult education program.

Also in closed session, the board expects to complete its evaluation of the superintendent.

During the public session, which begins at 6:30 p.m., Tim Gallant, director of buildings, grounds and transportation, will demonstrate the metal detectors the district recently purchased.

The metal detectors are expected to be used whenever anything happens at the middle or high schools that could endanger the welfare of students, said Hodgkin.

A new math teacher is expected to be appointed at Mountain Valley Middle School, and an accompanist for the spring high school musical.

A report by special education director Paige Coville will be presented. That report will include the hiring of a new educational technician to work within the program.
