ATLANTA – Maxime Ouellet, appearing in his first NHL game in three seasons, made 37 saves for his first NHL shutout and Robert Lang had two goals and two assists to help the Washington Capitals beat the Atlanta Thrashers 5-0 Tuesday night.

The win was the second in three games for new Washington head coach Glen Hanlon, who replaced the fired Bruce Cassidy last week. The Thrashers were shut out for the second straight game, following a 4-0 loss to the New York Islanders on Saturday.

Lang’s performance gave him 40 points, moving him a point ahead of Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk for the league lead.

The 22-year-old Ouellet had not played in an NHL game since the 2000-01 season and was making only his second NHL start and third-ever appearance but showed little nervousness.

Koltsov, who had scored on only two of 49 previous shots, took Tomas Surovy’s pass as he skated across the Sabres’ blue line and beat goalie Mika Noronen on a backhander as defenseman Henrik Tallinder tried to push him off the puck.

TORONTO – Mats Sundin and Gary Roberts each had a goal and an assist in the third period, and Ed Belfour earned his third shutout in the last six games as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat Tampa Bay Lightning 3-0 Tuesday night.

Darcy Tucker added an empty-net goal for the Maple Leafs, who set a franchise record by recording a point in 12 straight games (11-0-0-1). They celebrated with a group hug after the final buzzer.

Belfour made 21 saves for his fourth shutout of the season and the 69th of his career, two less than New Jersey’s Martin Brodeur on the active list.
