RALEIGH, N.C. – Rod Brind’Amour and Jeff O’Neill broke long scoring droughts when Carolina scored two late goals to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 in overtime in the Hurricanes coaching debut of Peter Laviolette on Thursday night.

Laviolette, who replaced Paul Maurice on Monday, promised an up-tempo system that would produce more scoring and exciting action.

But the lowest scoring team in the NHL couldn’t muster a goal against the worst defensive team in the league until Brind’Amour broke his 14-game scoring slump 15 seconds after Kevin Weekes left the Carolina net for an extra attacker with 1:10 left.

Lightning 5, Flyers 4

PHILADELPHIA – Martin St. Louis scored the tying goal late in the third period and added the winner 2:03 into overtime to lift the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 5-4 victory over the suddenly slumping Philadelphia Flyers.

Tampa Bay snapped a four-game losing streak while sending Philadelphia to its third consecutive home loss and stretching the Flyers’ winless streak to five.

Devils 3, Thrashers 0

ATLANTA – Martin Brodeur earned his eighth shutout this season and 72nd of his career, and Rob Skrlac had his first NHL goal to help the New Jersey Devils beat the Atlanta Thrashers 3-0.

Colin White and Scott Gomez added goals for New Jersey.

Brodeur could challenge the record for shutouts in a season, set by George Hainsworth who had 22 in the 44-game season of 1928-29. The post-expansion record is 15 set by Tony Esposito in 1969-70.

MONTREAL – Sheldon Souray scored 35 seconds into overtime for his first career three-goal game, giving the Montreal Canadiens a 5-4 win over the Nashville Predators.

Souray, who scored power-play goals in the first and second periods for his fourth multigoal game of the season, got the winner when he finished off a two-on-one by redirecting Jan Bulis’ pass into a wide open left side.

Rangers 4, Islanders 3

NEW YORK – Mike Dunham turned aside 23 shots and four Rangers scored in a 4-3 victory over the rival New York Islanders.

Petr Nedved, Mark Messier, Matthew Barnaby and Tom Poti scored for the Rangers, who have won two of three. The Rangers lead the all-time series with the Islanders 85-84-19.

The Islanders, who got goals from Jason Blake, Radek Martinek and Dave Scatchard, continued to struggle on the road. They only have two wins away from Long Island (2-8-2-1).

Senators 6, Blackhawks 1

OTTAWA – Marian Hossa scored two goals and set up another to lead the Ottawa Senators to a 6-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Martin Havlat had a goal and two assists, and Daniel Alfredsson scored his 200th NHL goal and added an assist.

Blues 4, Sharks 2

ST. LOUIS – Scott Mellanby scored two goals and Keith Tkachuk had three assists to help the St. Louis Blues extend their winning streak to six games with a 4-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks.

The Blues are 7-0-1 in their last eight games. St. Louis has won four of those games by one goal, including three wins in overtime. This was just the sixth time this season the Blues (20-6-2-1) have won by at least two goals.
