The town manager reported the first snowstorm of the year cost $52,000.

RUMFORD – Selectmen on Thursday agreed to send a request to discontinue a portion of an abandoned road to residents at the annual June town meeting.

Barry and Cyndi Deanis own property abutting a section of Old Swain Road, located off Spruce Street. They requested that the unused road be abandoned so they may improve their driveway and lawn.

If the road is abandoned, the portion abutting the Deanises would revert to them. The other portion of the old road would revert to Community Energy, a company that abuts the abandoned road.

Selectmen agreed to send the request to town meeting, provided necessary easements are retained by the town.

In other matters, the board moved its next meeting to Thursday, Jan. 8. It also granted liquor licenses and amusement permits to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Elks Lodge and Madison Motel.

An innholder’s and victualer’s license was granted to a new bed and breakfast known as The Ellis Guest House at 1000 Prospect St., near the Linnell Motel and Conference Center.

Town Manager Robert Welch told the board that the cost of plowing, sanding and removing snow resulting from the first snowstorm of the season earlier this month cost the town $52,000.
