FARMINGTON – Selectmen voted to accept an insurance option for employees that is expected to save the town money.

If an employee opts to not accept health insurance from the town and go with a spouse’s plan, the town would pay the employee 40 percent of what the town would have paid for insurance for that employee.

There is a stipulation that the employee would have to show proof of insurance.

For example, Town Manager Richard Davis said that if an employee has a traditional plan covering the employee only, the town’s cost is $6,562 a year.

Under this proposal the town saves $3,937.53.

“I think it’s a win-win situation for both the town and employees,” Davis said.

Selectmen agreed but requested that a policy be drafted to cover this option.
