St. Dom’s goalie Brandon Gervais puts Mt. Ararat on hold.

BRUNSWICK – You just have to love it when a plan comes together.

Josh Dwinal, A.J. Babineau, and Tyler Mantis scored and Brandon Gervais collected a shutout, as St. Dom’s (2-0) blanked Mt. Ararat, 3-0, in hockey action at Bowdoin College’s Dayton Arena Saturday.

According to Saints coach Bob Boucher, it was mission accomplished.

“We wanted to skate three lines and five defensemen,” said Boucher. “and we wanted to keep the high post and it worked for us tonight.”

It didn’t take long for St. Dom’s to take advantage of an opportunity.

On the power play, the Saints scored what proved to be the winning goal at the 9:57 mark of the first period.

Dwinal lit the lamp with a wrist shot from just inside the faceoff circle to the left of Mt. Ararat netminder Jordan Martin. Dwinal was set up on the play by John Rutt, and as Rutt moved deep into the corner, he passed back to Dwinal who had the shot. Martin got a piece of the puck, but it trickled into the net.

“We knew we needed a goal,” said Dwinal. “We needed to start it out fast so we would get momentum. We made a play and put it in.”

Two and a half minutes later, the opportunity was even larger.

With a pair of Eagles in the box on minor penalties called at the same time, St. Dom’s went to work with a 5-on-3 advantage.

It took 33 seconds for the Saints to make it a 2-0 game.

Mike Carpenter’s shot was stopped by Martin, but he didn’t control the rebound which came out in front to Babineau.

Tyler Mantis closed out the scoring in the second period with a wrist shot from the left side of the slot. Dwinal was given an assist on the play.

Even with a 3-0 lead, the shots were even at the second intermission. And that’s where Gervais came in.

“Nice shutout,” said Boucher. “The first two periods could have been a tie game. Mt. Ararat has a solid team and they had golden opportunities to score. Brandon came up big for us in the first and second periods.”

“Our defense played really great today,” said Gervais. “They cleared out all the rebounds and they prevented their big guns like Mark Rogers and Jesse Snider from getting good scoring chances. They did a real good job today.”

In the final period, the Saints simply didn’t let Mt. Ararat (2-1) have a chance to get back into the game. St. Dom’s outshot the Eagles 17-6 in that period alone.

“The third period was our strongest of the game,” said Boucher. “That’s a good sign for us in this early stage of the year.”
