Between 23 million and 28 million people will buy real Christmas trees this year in the United States.

Last year, about 21 percent of homes displayed real trees, 48 percent displayed artificial trees and 32 percent displayed no tree at all.

The top Christmas tree producing states are Oregon, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Washington and Wisconsin.

Last year, 35 percent of trees were purchased at choose-and-cut farms, 22 at retail lots and 21 percent at discount retailers.

The first decorated Christmas tree was in 1510 in Riga, Latvia. Early Christmas Trees were decorated with paper, fruits and sweets.

In 1923, President Calvin Coolidge started the National Christmas Tree lighting ceremony now held every year on the White house lawn.
