WEST PARIS – Town Clerk Cheryl Shattenberg reported to selectmen Thursday that she is close to filling the positions of Deputy Clerk Jane Littlehale and Office Assistant Beverly Farrar, who resigned recently.

Shattenberg said she has received 18 applications and conducting phone and personal interviews.

“The interviews are going well,” she said, “and I hope to make a decision soon.”

The board authorized her to fill them.

The deputy clerk will work 30 hours a week and the office assistant 20 a week. There will be no benefits.

The positions will be reviewed after the March 2004 town meeting when the town’s first manager takes office.

The manager’s post is expected to be filled prior to town meeting. The town manager will decide on hours for the positions and benefits for recommendation to the board.

Selectmen set the beginning salaries at $8.50 per hour for the deputy clerk and $8 per hour for the office assistant.

The salaries will be reviewed after the town meeting.

In other business, the board plans to study proposals submitted by Shattenberg regarding a new Employee Manual and Performance Evaluation Forms for employees. In a memo she said she has been working on both, “but I am requesting the selectmen review them and offer suggestions they may have regarding each item.”

A decision may be made at the next board meeting, scheduled from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24. The town office will close at 2 p.m. that day and reopen at 8 a.m. Friday and close at 1 p.m.
