PARIS – An evening of theater, music and dance to celebrate Alan Day’s 50th birthday will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at the forum of Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School in South Paris.

Featuring choreographed and improvised works by Day and other dancers, the “performance party” will also include percussion solos and a circle jam by members of CommonDrum and their friends. The center of the evening’s fare will be an “ecstatic dance” performance improvised by eight members of Moving Thru, a community of more than 50 dancers in the area who study and practice the art of the 5-Rhythm Wave.

The night’s celebration will conclude with a set of music by Freakwitch, a six-member ensemble co-led by Matt Shields of Hollis and James Lindenschmidt of Portland, and including Day on hand percussion and conga. Dancing by audience members is highly encouraged.

The party/show is free and open to the public, however there will be a donation box set up to encourage contributions to Fare Share Co-op’s Commons space, a room on Norway’s Main Street that the co-op keeps available for community use.

Currently home to the Commons Art Collective and diverse community groups such as Oxford Hills Duplicate Bridge, Common Cause, and the Commons Music Collective, the Fare Share Commons is 100 percent supported by donations and use fees.

This event is chem-free; a snack concession will not be operated during it, but a plentiful supply of spring water will be on hand.

50 Years Alive is dedicated to Day’s father, Frank, who died in 1970, five weeks before his 50th birthday.

“My intention is to bring him along at my side as I move across this threshold, father-and-son who are now brothers-in-spirit,” Alan Day said.
