NORWAY – The Commons Art Collective announces the opening of a retrospective show of photographic work by Alan Day at the Fare Share Commons at 447 Main St.

It is titled 50/50 – Threshold: ‘Expo? Sure!’ There are 50 images and artifacts from 50 years of the artist’s life. The focus of this show, marking the approach of the artist’s 50th birthday, is a journey through time, offering symbols and pictures that evoke the experience of crossing over or moving through transformation and change.

The original definition of “threshold” gives the connotation of holding inside a room the fruits or “threshings” of people’s labor in producing food, usually grain. The first thresholds were boards slid into slots in doorways to perform just such a function.

This exhibit is an artistic “threshold” in that sense. There are also many images mounted in this show that suggest a movement into or out of the viewer’s space: Stairways, windows, doorways, portals, tunnels and bridges. The viewer is asked to witness these images and make connections with his/her own stories of transition, growth and change.

The opening reception will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2. The exhibit will continue to through Jan. 31. Gallery hours are 3 to 6 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. For information phone 743-0165.
