FARMINGTON – The Farmington Masons Maine Lodge 20 invites blood donors to support its annual New Year’s Eve blood drive by donating blood from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at Franklin Memorial Hospital. Donors will receive a Badge of Honor T-shirt.

“We are strongly encouraging donors to attend,” said Thomas Miller. “Poor winter weather is a double-edged sword when it comes to the blood supply. It increases both the potential for serious accidents at a time when it sometimes causes the cancellation of blood drives.”

Maine hospitals use approximately 300 to 350 pints of blood daily. Blood is used for surgery, accidents, chemotherapy, kidney dialysis and many other life-threatening conditions.

First-time donors are needed to replace donors who have moved away of become ineligible to donate. Donors must be at least 17 years of age, in generally good health and weigh at least 110 pounds. There is no upper age limit to donate blood.
