The estimate does not include damage to the Water District.

BETHEL – Severe river bank erosion and damage to a wastewater discharge pipe accounted for the bulk of the town’s $289,000 flood damage estimate Tuesday.

Town Manager Scott Cole said he filed a report with the Oxford County Emergency Management Agency in Paris Tuesday, claiming $200,000 was needed to repair the pipe, and $80,000 to repair erosion of an Androscoggin River bank.

The other $9,000 was attributed to roadwork, and fire and police wages.

Cole said the effluent outflow pipe is adjacent to Davis Park, which is where the river bank was “severely eroded” during Wednesday’s heavy rains and Thursday’s flooding.

That initial $289,000 estimate represents the town of Bethel only, not the Bethel Water District, which is a separate entity.

John Head, a water district trustee, said that as of Tuesday afternoon, he didn’t have a damage estimate from last Wednesday night’s floodwaters, which shut down the treatment plant for more than 24 hours.
