RUMFORD – The SAD 43 board has agreed to pursue the acquisition of a parcel of land and associated buildings.

Although no formal vote was taken following a 20-minute closed session, Curriculum Coordinator Gloria Jenkins said the board was “receptive” to the idea.

Superintendent James Hodgkin said last week that although he can’t disclose the land owner or location of the parcel and buildings, the acquisition could fit into regionalization discussions with neighboring school districts.

These discussions, held during the past few months, seek to find ways to provide broader and less costly services for the districts. One idea is to create a central location for a common bus garage to be shared by the area’s districts.

In a second closed session, Jenkins said the board provided an informal evaluation of Hodgkin that was both positive and supportive. Because Hodgkin has been on the job for only four months, a more formalized evaluation will be conducted in May. Hodgkin also conducted a self-evaluation.

The board also presented a list of goals for Hodgkin, said Jenkins. Among them were the continued improvement of communication between the home and school, and between the district’s staff and administrators. He was also encouraged to continue to try to improve the working relationship between the administration and staff.

A second goal was to do whatever it takes to improve the educational performance of the district’s 1,600 students, she said.
