RUMFORD – An elderly Rumford woman died at a Lewiston hospital after being injured in a car collision Monday morning on Route 108.
Police Sgt. Stacy Carter said Marjorie Coulombe, 79, of Dragoon Road pulled out of a driveway just west of Knox Excavation on Route 108 as a Ford van was heading eastbound.
Coulombe’s 1992 Oldsmobile sedan was struck on the driver’s side by the 2000 van driven by Alexa Kaubris, 16, of Rumford.
Coulombe was transported by helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston where she was initially reported to be in critical condition by a hospital spokeswoman.
Alexa’s mother, Pamela Kaubris, 44, and brother, Cameron, 11, were passengers in the van at the time of the 10:24 a.m. accident. All three were treated at the scene by Med-Care Ambulance Service and released.
Both vehicles were destroyed.
Carter said an approximate three-mile stretch of Route 108, from the intersection with the MeadWestvaco mill yard to the Peru four-corners was closed to traffic for about 2 hours.
Members of the Fire Department cleaned up a small amount of fluids from the vehicles resulting from the accident.
Officer Doug Maifeld assisted at the scene.
