The man who held up a Lewiston sandwich shop remains at large.

LEWISTON – A masked man carrying a hatchet walked into a Lisbon Street sandwich shop Monday night and demanded money from a woman working behind the counter.

Police swarmed on D’Angelo’s Sandwich Shop about 8 p.m. after the hatchet-wielding suspect fled the business, investigators said.

Nobody was hurt in the heist. The store clerk handed over an undisclosed amount of cash when the suspect threatened her with the hatchet, police said. She locked the door of the business and called for help once the man was gone.

Minutes later, police began searching side streets that run behind D’Angelo’s between Lisbon and Pleasant streets.

Investigators said the suspect had entered D’Angelo’s wearing a cap and what appeared to be a crude, homemade mask. He was clutching what was described as a camping hatchet.

He was last seen running down Albert Street next to a fire department substation, police said. Officers in cruisers and on foot searched Albert, Brown and Baird streets as well as Simard and South avenues near the scene of the heist.

Other officers were examining footprints in the snow leading into a wooded area along Pleasant Street. Investigators were waiting for a police dog to assist them in the search.

At D’Angelo’s, detectives dusted the doors and other items hoping to get fingerprints from the suspect.

The 1024 Lisbon St. sandwich shop remained closed while police began an investigation. The clerk’s family arrived at the business shortly after they were notified she had been robbed.

Police remained in the area around D’Angelo’s late Monday night. It was the second robbery at a Lisbon Street business in five days.

On Dec. 22, two men were arrested less than 15 minutes after a robbery at Rite-Aid at 987 Lisbon St. In that heist, one of the suspects demanded a prescription painkiller from a store employee.
