AUGUSTA (AP)- Maine State Game Wardens are investigating the state’s first snowmobile fatality of the season and a separate snowmobile accident that injured a 9-year-old boy.

In Northport, a snowmobile driven by Oakley Shedd, 64, of Northport hit a gate on a tote road that intersects with Hart Road around 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

The snowmobile struck the gate and then continued forward, hitting his truck.

A passenger on the snowmobile, Jared Hanson, 6, suffered a broken nose and broken teeth. Neither of the two were wearing a helmet.

Shedd was taken to Waldo General in Belfast and then transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after midnight Monday.

In Pittston Academy Grant, a nine-year-old was injured after the snowmobile he was on struck a row of trees.

Chris Ames Jr., was sitting on the snowmobile while his father, Chris Ames Sr., was filling it with fuel around 2 p.m. Sunday. After he finished fueling the machine the father started it up with his son still on it.

The snowmobile unexpectedly took off across the parking lot, traveling about 135 feet before striking a group of trees. The boy suffered leg and head injuries. He was wearing a helmet. He was transported by helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center.
