WILTON – More than 100 drivers were questioned as they drove by the home of contractor Raymond E. “Butch” Weed on Monday night, six days after he was found slain there.

“We did get some information that was helpful,” State Police Detective Mark Lopez said Tuesday.

Weed, 40, was found dead in the entry of his restored cape at 32 Main St. on Dec. 23. Friends discovered his body while delivering Christmas gifts. Police have not disclosed how he was killed or a possible motive.

Between 4 and 7 p.m. Monday, State Police detectives with assistance from Wilton police conducted the roadblock, informing motorists of the investigation and asking if they routinely traveled the upper section of Main Street.

Those who answered yes, Lopez explained, were asked if they passed by on Dec. 23 and if they noticed anything suspicious.

Typically when used, roadblocks are set up within a few days of a crime, however, Lopez said the holiday threw things off, and Monday was the first day investigators thought commuter traffic was back to normal.

Even with the roadblock, investigators had no new answers on Tuesday after a full week of around the clock questioning of more than 100 individuals including Weed’s family, friends, customers, employees and others who may have seen him in his final hours.

State Police spokesman Steven McCausland said there are no immediate plans to set up another roadblock, though the option hasn’t been ruled out.

A full team of 10 detectives was back in Wilton on Tuesday conducting interviews. They plan to continue working through the New Year’s holiday and until an arrest is made.

Weed was active and respected in his community.

“We can’t make predictions of when a case will be solved,” Lopez explained. “We hope to solve this in the very near future. We still have lots of work to do and by no means is the investigation slowing down. We’re all out there and trying to find whoever did this.”

Weed’s body has been released from the state Medical Examiner’s office where an autopsy was conducted last Wednesday and a New Year’s Eve funeral at 5 p.m. has been scheduled in Wilton.
