JAY – A Jay woman said she’ll have the needed signatures to request a special town meeting in January. The petitions ask voters to transfer $50,000 from the town’s undesignated fund to save the school system’s lunch program.

Laurie Hutchins submitted the petition to selectmen earlier this month.

Hutchins said she had collected more signatures by Tuesday afternoon and plans to submit them by noon Wednesday, the deadline to seek a special town meeting in January.

And even if there is a special town meeting and voters approve transferring the money, Town Manager Ruth Marden said, it doesn’t mean the School Committee has to spend that money.

The issue would then go before the school board, she said.

The School Committee voted to eliminate the food service bakery and eliminate jobs effective Dec. 31.

As of Tuesday, 134 signatures had been verified, Town Manager Ruth Marden said.

Two more sheets containing about 30 signatures had been submitted but were not verified.

Hutchins said she’ll have the needed 197 signatures of registered voters to request selectmen to hold a special town meeting.

Some people hadn’t realized they needed to be registered voters in town to have their signatures count on a petition, Hutchins said.

Selectmen are expected to take up the petition request at 6 p.m. Monday at the Community Building.
