1932-2004
LEWISTON – Joan (Joanne) K. Herrin, 71, of 21 Rodmar Road, Minot, passed away Friday, Jan. 2, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with her loving family by her side, after a courageous battle with cancer.
One of seven children, Joan was born in Exeter on May 4, 1932, to Elbert and Bertie Anderson Knowles. While attending high school in Skowhegan, she worked at Lakewood Theater where she met many movie stars from her era. She spent most of her married years as a homemaker and devoted mother. She had an insatiable appetite for reading that began in her early childhood. She would often read several books a day.
She also enjoyed going to lawn sales with her sister, Marlene, and spending time with her grandchildren and dear friends, Jeanette Benson, Emma Belanger and Elizabeth Bova.
Prior to retiring in 1993, she worked at Pioneer Plastics in Auburn, where she had been employed for 18 years in the samples department.
Joan leaves behind: her son, Stephen Herrin and companion, Lucille Dick, both of Auburn; her son, Patrick Herrin of Lewiston; her daughter, Linda Cannon and husband, Russell Cannon, of Minot; her cherished grandchildren, Amy and Erin Cannon and Jennifer, Noah and Stephen Herrin; and her delightful great-granddaughter, Sierra Hanson. She also leaves behind her loving sister and caregiver, Marlene Dubay of Skowhegan and her brother, with whom she was very proud, Harvard Knowles, a Professor at Philips-Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Carrie Knowles, and her brothers, Ralph, Lloyd Reginald and William Knowles.
