CARRABASSETT VALLEY – A man was arrested after he allegedly drove recklessly for 2 miles with his girlfriend’s arm trapped in a truck window. The woman was on the running board on the passenger side of the truck, police said, and the driver was allegedly attempting to throw her off.

During the incident on New Year’s Day, Joel Harper, 22, of Southwest Harbor, allegedly drove at high speed on the Sugarloaf Access Road and Route 27.

Harper was charged with aggravated reckless conduct, Carrabassett Valley police Chief Ron Moody said.

Harper was swerving and turned the truck around 360 degrees a couple times in an attempt to throw her off the truck, Moody said.

The couple was staying at a condominium with friends when they got into a dispute.

The girlfriend was trying to talk to him, Moody said, but Harper rolled her arm up in the window and started driving. Eventually, she was able to get off the vehicle and call 911, Moody said.

She suffered some bruises, he added.

Carrabassett Valley officers Jason Mancine and John Bonnell handled the incident.

Moody said he came in from home to take Harper to the Franklin County jail in Farmington.

Harper was released on $500 cash bail on Jan. 1. He has a Feb. 25 court date in Farmington.
