LEWISTON – U.S. Sen. Olympia J. Snowe, R-Maine, plans to meet with seniors from the Lewiston-Auburn area at the SeniorsPlus luncheon at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7.

Snowe will make initial remarks and then talk with seniors in an informal setting to address questions about Medicare and the prescription drug legislation signed into law by President George W. Bush last month.

“The Medicare Prescription Drug law is comprehensive legislation, and its scope has understandably led to questions from seniors regarding what this first-ever prescription drug benefit might mean for them,” said Snowe.

She said she hoped to hear firsthand from seniors and to help them understand the “substantial” coverage the prescription drug legislation offers.

Snowe plans similar events in a number of Maine communities as she tours the state in upcoming days.

Also on Wednesday, Snowe will meet with new Lewiston Mayor Lionel Guay and will tour Strainrite, an award-winning Maine business in Auburn. Strainrite received a certificate of excellence from the U.S. Department of Commerce in October. The export Achievement Award recognizes those small- and medium-sized businesses that have successfully entered new markets. The company sells its filtration products in many foreign markets, including China, South Korea, Colombia and Argentina.
