LEWISTON – Bates College alumnus Thomas Whalen ’86, assistant professor of social science at Boston University, will discuss his book Dynasty’s End, a history of the Bill Russell-era Celtics, on the campus of his alma mater at the Edmund S. Muskie Archives at 4:15 p.m. on Jan. 15.

The book focuses mainly on the 1968-69 season, the last one of Russell’s career. Whalen’s extensively researched account includes 888 footnotes, and he cites 101 books. His work has been recognized by several people, including Bill Syken in the Nov. 24, 2003 edition of Sports Illustrated.

“His effort pays off in compelling portraits of both the players and the era that brim with colorful detail,” writes Syken. “If you want a complete portrait of one of the great success stories in team sports, you don’t have to read 101 books. Thanks to Whalen, you only have to read one.”

Whalen will also be available for a book signing session following the lecture.
