GREENWOOD – Selectmen learned Tuesday that the Department of Environmental Protection wants the town to obtain a permit to refurbish berms on the Alder River Dam.

Jim Sysco, engineer for Small Hydro East of Newry, created specifications for repairing the sluice gate and firming up the berms. His plans call for a concrete column, 12-feet long and 12-inches in circumference, to be centered in the berms for stability.

Town Manager Carol Whitman said she received a letter from the DEP saying a permit was required because the addition of the posts was more than just typical maintenance.

Whitman said there is no start date set for the work, but the board wants the work completed by Sept. 30.

She said she hopes to seek bids for the dam work by Jan. 16.

On another issue, selectmen were told the final comprehensive town plan was finished and met with state approval.

The plan had been sent to the state for approval in the spring and it was returned with several minor changes.

Selectmen were told Tuesday that the comprehensive planning committee incorporated all the changes and the state approved the plan.

The board set an informational public hearing to inform the public of the amendments at the Feb. 17 meeting.

The comprehensive plan must be approved at the March town meeting.
