1920 – 2004

LEWISTON – Edward Williams, 83, of 15 Surry Lane, died Sunday morning, Jan. 11, at Central Maine Medical Center.

Born in Lewiston, Sept. 12, 1920, the son of Edward and Agnes (Miles) Williams, he was educated in Auburn schools and graduated from Edward Little High School.

Mr. Williams was a Marine Corp veteran, having served in the Pacific Theater of Operations at the battle of Guadalcanal during World War II.

He was married to Verna Williams, who died in May of 1999.

He worked many years at local shoe shops, including Clark Shoe and Shapiro Bros., spending many of those years as a foreman and department head.

He was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church, the VFW and the New Auburn Social Club.

He was also a charter member of Fairlawn Country Club and a founding member of the Lewiston-Auburn Detachment of the Marine Corp League. He was a lifelong Republican and an avid Red Sox fan who enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing cards and cooking.

He leaves three sons, Benjamin F. Gonya Sr. and wife, Linda of Poland, Edward M. Williams and wife, Sandra of Cape Elizabeth and Robert J. Williams and wife, Suzanne of Camden; his faithful and loving companion, Terry Tewhey of Lewiston; 11 grandchildren, Peter M. Gonya, Benjamin F. Gonya, William A. Gonya, Edward M. Williams Jr., Jennifer Williams, Gregory J. Williams, Nathan R. Williams, Richard A. Gonya and wife, Brenda, Bonnie Blair and husband, Steve, Lisa Forgues and husband, Dave and Kelley Thibodeau and husband, Paul; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a stepson, Richard Gonya in 1989.
