BANGOR (AP) – A Maine trucker who was critically injured last week when struck by a rock that was thrown through his windshield on Interstate 95 in Connecticut is on the mend.
Wayne Tapley, 48, of Littleton, Maine, was listed in good condition Monday at Yale New Haven Hospital after being transferred out of the surgical intensive care unit over the weekend.
Tapley was driving a tractor-trailer rig in the northbound lanes of I-95 in Milford, Conn., on Thursday evening when he was hit by a rock, police said. Investigators said he may have been dazed or knocked unconscious, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and sideswipe a tour bus carrying 45 passengers, two of whom were injured.
Tapley’s truck hit the median barrier, swerved back across the highway and plunged down an embankment, police said.
Connecticut State Police initially were called to the scene after several motorists reported that rocks were thrown onto the interstate.
