Thanks to reporter Mark Laflamme, not the Auburn Police Department, Auburn residents now know that a convicted rapist and murderer on probation from Connecticut visits his brother in Auburn (Jan. 8).

The article stated that for several days, Auburn Police didn’t know Hammond was in Auburn.

Truth be told, I called APD the very afternoon that he arrived on Dec. 26.

On Dec. 27, an APD lieutenant asked me, “What do you want us to do?”

I insisted APD should let this rapist-murderer know that police knew he was here.

For three days, Hammond was here and APD never went to see him once. So he roamed freely.

That same lieutenant told me Hammond would only be here until Monday and that there were probably other murderers in Auburn. Now that was refreshing to hear.

APD officials never contacted me to share what steps they were taking to protect my neighborhood from Hammond and help relieve the stress.

The reporter called me to share what the chief and deputy chief were doing. I should pay my outrageously high tax dollars to the paper instead of Auburn.

APD has never contacted me with any follow-up disposition when I have called them for police service.

Is it APD’s fault that Connecticut Probation allowed a rapist-murderer to visit Auburn? No.

Did APD know Hammond was here for three days? Yes.

Should APD have visited and identified this dangerous felon while he was here? Absolutely.
