GREENE – Greene Central School was one of many schools listed last fall as failing to meet requirements of the new No Child Left Behind Act. The school has been removed from that list, following an appeal by the district, said SAD 52 Superintendent Tom Hanson.
Under the act, schools are required to include 95 percent of their student population in the testing/assessment process. The state report indicated that Greene Central had failed to meet that participation requirement, Hanson said. SAD 52 filed an appeal asking state officials to review that data and, upon review, Maine Education Commissioner Susan Gendron issued a letter stating that the school had met the criteria.
The school has been removed from the Continuous Improvement Monitor Schools list.
Since the initial release of the adequate yearly progress data, numerous schools across the state have filed appeals with state officials. As school officials reviewed their individual results for verification of the state report, Hanson said, many of them found inconsistencies between actual data and the report. These appeals have led to a number of schools being removed from the monitor list.
