LEWISTON – Cecile Gendreau Mathieu, 76, of 24 Acadia Ave. Lewiston, died on Saturday, Jan. 17, at Marguerite d’Youville Pavilion, after a long illness, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Madawaska on June 25, 1927, the daughter of Donat and Sophie Cyr Gendreau. She was educated in Madawaska schools and moved to Lewiston with her family in 1943. On Sept. 30, 1950, she was married to Andrew R. Mathieu, who passed away on May 8, 1990. She worked most of her life in the shoe industry, retiring in 1989.

She enjoyed musicals, reading, spending time with her family and doting on her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all those she leaves behind. She was a communicant of Holy Cross Church, a member of the Ladies of Ste. Anne, and belonged to Holy Cross Senior Citizens.

Survivors include: two daughters, Sandra Belanger and her husband, Maurice, and Nina Baril and her husband, Paul, both of Lewiston; a son, James Mathieu and his wife, Lorraine, of Rollinsford, N.H.; a sister, Priscille Pelletier of Madawaska; a brother-in-law Gerard Mathieu and his wife, Simone, of Lewiston; eight grandchildren, Krista Nelson of Hudson, N.H., Todd Belanger of Somerville, Mass., Jason, David and Thomas Baril of Lewiston, Joshua, Caitlin and Abigail Mathieu of Rollinsford, N.H.; and a niece and several nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Brenda Mathieu in 1952.
