President Bush has certainly come up with some interesting initiatives lately. He wants to revive trips to the moon, for one. Perhaps by demonstrating our technological superiority, the rest of the world will overlook the fact that we lack any moral vision, using 30 percent of the world’s resources, while only having 5 percent of the world’s population. Carl Sagan, astronomer and philosopher, argued that we might need to colonize space as a last resort, but he made the proposal sarcastically.

How is President Bush planning on funding his trillion-dollar space fantasy? With another tax cut for the wealthy?

Perhaps it is time to take pride in our high standard of ethics, rather than our new toys. Cutting off all trade with China would be a good start. China is notable for destruction of the environment, lack of human rights and genocide in Tibet. Yet the importers who profit from trade with China are the very people most likely to contribute to the president’s re-election campaign.

As I suggested above, maybe nobody will notice. On another note, I think it’s time we forgave President Bush for his OUI conviction and lapse of memory thereof. After all, it’s not easy growing up in a disingenuous Republican family with all that big oil money burning a hole in your pocket. That puts a lot of stress on a lad.
