1927 – 2004

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Reginald Louis Dews, 76, of Otisfield, died suddenly in Port Charlotte, Fla.

He was born in East Madison, April 5, 1927, son of Charles and Blanche Dews. He was married to Duveen Bryant Dews for 52 years. He served in the Navy Air Corp during World War II, graduated from Dexter High School in 1947, and from Higgins Classical Institute in 1948.

He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Gorham Teacher’s College in 1956, and was elementary school principal in Owls Head, then elementary principal and teacher in Newport.

He received his Master of Education from the University of Maine in 1961. From 1961 to 1984, he was elementary supervisor and principal in MSAD 51 Cumberland-North Yarmouth.

He was President of the Maine Elementary Principal’s Association and President of the MSAD 17 Oxford Hills Regional school board.

“Reg” spent his career striving to improve children’s education. He was friendly and fun and always had a joke to tell. His favorite activities were snowmobiling, hunting, fishing and golf. He was particularly proud of his children. He will be missed.

He is survived by his wife, Duveen Bryant Dews; five children, Elizabeth Dews, Charles Dews, Barbara Dews Rodriguez, Shelly Dews Chigier, and Edwin P. Dews, along with their spouses, Theresa Borden, Wendy Coughlan, Sandra Dews, Roy Rodriguez, Ben Chigier, and Amy Dews; and 11 grandchildren.
