MINOT – Danielle Lee Damon, 19, of Minot, perished in a fire at her home on Pottle Hill Road last Saturday, Jan. 17.

“Denny” spent her early childhood in the log cabin that her parents, Mark Damon and Victoria Barnard Rodriguez, built in 1987. She loved nature…whether taking care of animals, walking in the woods or spring camping. She also looked forward to attending street rod shows with her family and friends. The vivid colors of the Maine outdoors boosted her innate creative artistic side.

In November of 1993, the family moved from the remote cabin to the town of Summersville, S.C. She attended local schools where she was accepted into the GATE Program for Gifted and Talented children and was also a cheerleader.

She returned to Maine, as a freshman and attended Poland High School. She loved playing defense for her hockey team, hiking with her friends and “just hanging out”.

Her sister, Sabrina, states, “Denny inspires me still… she always made me attempt to do things I was afraid to do but was afraid to try. She was so strong and never gave up. Her strong will and free spirit were evident as she struggled through her high school years and her proudest achievement was receiving her diploma from the Bakerstown School.”

She worked at a variety of jobs until she found one she truly enjoyed. She found her work at Lutheran Social Services, it gave her great satisfaction. Life came full circle when she and her companion, James Lacompte, moved back to the cabin this last fall.

According to James, “many words could be used to describe Danielle…too many to write just like the never ending questions we all have about why this happened. To tell you the truth, I can’t find words that would do Denny justice.”

Her brother Mark sums it all up when he says, “Denny was the best.”
