RUMFORD – Virginia Elementary School recently held a Reading is Fundamental distribution, and in honor of the Wright Brother’s 100-year anniversary, librarian Carol Thibeault chose a “Soar With Books” theme.

RIF is a federally-funded reading program, held three times a year, where every student gets to choose a free book of his choice.

For this RIF event, students also had other opportunities to win additional books by entering several different contests.

There was a Color Bizzy the Airplane Contest and the winners were Cheyene Gannon and Eliza Buccina.

There was also a Flight Trivia Contest where students had to research and answer several questions about the Wright Brothers and their first flight. The winners of that contest were Brooke Dolloff, Makaila Conley, Sheridan Hamilton, Makayla White, Stephanie Garcia, Josie Munzner, Caleb Turner, Sawyer Leonard and Matt Thurston.

In advance of RIF day, every student was asked to make a paper airplane of their own design. On RIF day each of them was given a chance to launch their plane by letting it soar across the gym. One winner from each class was chosen. And winners were Kevin Cogley, Bradley Fournier, Adam Volkernick, Austin Varnum, Tyler McInnis, Caleb Turner and Jim Pastor.

Aside from their RIF books, every student also received a cardboard airplane to assemble.
