Local residents can change parties in order to vote in next week’s caucus.

AUBURN – Want to jump your party’s ship so you can participate in Maine’s Democratic caucuses on Sunday, Feb. 8?

Well, if you are registered as a Republican or Green Independent party voter, Friday is the last day you can un-enroll from your party and still vote in the caucus.

According to City Clerk Mary Lou Magno, switching parties is as easy as coming down to the clerk’s office and signing a card.

Magno stressed on Thursday that voters who are registered but not enrolled in any party have up until the time the caucus opens to register.

In the past month, four Auburn residents who had previously been registered with no party affiliation enrolled as Democrats and eight switched to the Democratic party from other parties, mostly the Republican party, Magno said.

Of the 15,497 registered voters in Auburn in 2002, according to the state’s Web site, 5,329 were registered as Democrats, 207 as Green Independents, 3,810 as Republicans and 6,151 had no party affiliation.

Of the 28,216 registered voters in Lewiston in 2002, 13,129 were registered as Democrats, 448 as Green Independents, 4,799 as Republicans and 9,790 had no party affiliation.

Of the 4,945 registered voters in Rumford in 2002, 2,415 were registered as Democrats, 24 as Green Independents, 820 as Republicans and 1,686 had no party affiliation.

Of the 5,644 registered voters in Farmington in 2002, 1,435 were registered as Democrats, 156 as Green Independents, 1,822 as Republicans and 2,231 had no party affiliation.
