1913 – 2004

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. – Deane Stockton “Stocky” Stevens, 90, died Friday, Jan. 16, in Philadelphia, Penn.

Born in Philadelphia on June 3, 1913, he moved back to this city in October of 2003 to be close to his grandchildren. He was raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he married his wife Elizabeth Rosalie Martin in 1939.

In 1950, he moved to Maine where he worked tirelessly for a healthy two-party system in local and state political circles. He served as treasurer and tax collector for the city of Augusta, as well as executive director of the Augusta Chamber of Commerce. He retired as finance director of the city of Portland when he joined his wife in the public relations partnership of Stevens and Stevens.

A longtime active Toastmaster and public speaker, Mr. Stevens traveled throughout New England and the Maritime Provinces as District Governor 45. He was president and founder of ProLife Education Association, a member of the Dow Board of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, and an active member of the Maine Christian Civic League.

He is survived by his wife; his daughter, Margaret Philippon and her husband George of Suffield, Conn.; his son-in-law, Sheridan Richards of New Sharon; his grandchildren, Dr. Audra Philippon and her husband Mark Sherman, and James Philippon and his wife Lynn, all of Philadelphia, Penn., Robert Richards and his wife Celine of New Sharon, and Sarah Richards of Portland; seven great-grandchildren, Angela, Deanna, and Adele Richards, Antoinette Sherman Cahill, Stephanie Sherman, Alexandra Nelson-Shermon, and Boden Gray Philippon; and two great-great-grandchildren, Sean and Evan Cahill.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Deanne Richards; and two grandchildren, Ross and Susannah Richards.
