LEWISTON – Eleanor “Ellie” R. Verrill, 68, of Pinewood Drive in Auburn, died Friday, January 23, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center after a long struggle with lung disease.
She was born Eleanor Ruth Greenlaw on April 25, 1935 in Boston, Mass., the daughter of Ruth and William Greenlaw. She attended Auburn schools.
She married Norman James Verrill on April 25, 1954 in Lewiston. Early in their marriage, they moved often because Norman served in the Air Force. During his business career he owned several businesses including a restaurant in Arizona and a book store in Lewiston. Ellie was his constant companion and assistant in all these endeavors.
She was an active member of Pathway Community Church in Sabattus. She enjoyed traveling, eating out, reading, playing the lottery, and shopping, especially at J.C. Penney.
The joy of her life were her two children, Cheryl and Norman. She also deeply loved her six special grandchildren: Kimberly, Edith, Lillian, Justin, Matthew, and Trevor. She will long be remembered by them for her special care and generosity.
She is survived by her husband, Norman J. Verrill; her daughter, Cheryl Verrill Haley of Auburn; her son, Norman J. Verrill Jr. and his wife Linda of North Monmouth; and six grandchildren.
She is also survived by her sisters Betty Lachance, Barbara Estes, Mary Haskell, Roberta Greenlaw, and Sandra Donaghy. Her surviving brothers are William H. Greenlaw Jr., David Greenlaw, and John Greenlaw.
She was predeceased by her parents; four sisters, Dorothy, Alfreda, Joan, and Margaret; and an infant son, Brian Keith Verrill.
