Police were searching for young men who wore hoods during the attack.
LEWISTON – Police were searching for a group of suspects early Tuesday after a local man was stabbed numerous times in front of a Pierce Street tenement.
Michael Landry, 49, was admitted to Central Maine Medical Center around midnight, 15 minutes after he was apparently attacked by a group of people in the street, police said.
A nursing supervisor at CMMC did not know Landry’s condition as he was being examined at the hospital. Police investigating the stabbing described his chest wounds as life-threatening.
What led up to the attack was unclear. Witnesses reported hearing shouting on Pierce Street shortly before a group of between three and five people fled the area.
Landry was found sprawled in front of 125 Pierce St. moments later. A woman who saw Landry laying in the road said he was not moving after the attack. He was found at the side of the road, next to a snowbank.
Witnesses said the attackers appeared to be young men or teenagers and that they were each wearing hoods.
Police who responded to the area began searching downtown streets for the suspects. At the time, several fights were reported on neighboring blocks. Officers rushed to brawls on Blake Street and on Pine Street, but did not find the suspects.
It was unknown if those fights were related to the attack that left Landry injured. No arrest were made.
Several people called 911 after hearing the fight outside. However, police received varying accounts of how many people were involved. Some potential witnesses said three men had attacked Landry. Some said four, others five.
By 12:30 a.m., police were still interviewing witnesses and searching for suspects. Detectives were called in while other officers went to CMMC.
No weapon was found at the scene of the attack. Police did not say how many times Landry was stabbed, although they described his injuries as multiple stab wounds.
Landry’s address was not immediately known early Tuesday. He was last known to live on Pine Street, a short distance from where he was stabbed.
