RANGELEY – Tickets for decent seats at the upcoming Daytona 500 are going on eBay for about $300 a pop.

And those won’t even get you within shouting distance of your favorite NASCAR driver.

This weekend, car racing fans will get a chance not only to see their favorite drivers from New England, but for $10 they’ll get a chance to ride beside and even ahead of them as the 5th annual Busch North Scene Snowmobile Poker Run for Charity rolls into Rangeley.

Former NASCAR Winston Cup team owner and Busch North Series star Joe Bessey, a Rangeley celebrity of sorts, and two time NASCAR Busch North Series Champion Andy Santerre headline the event.

Past BNS champions Dale Shaw and Mike Olsen will be revving up snowmobiles for the poker run as will BNS race winners Mike Johnson, Eddie MacDonald and Tracy Gordon.

Drivers Rick Bell, who finished second in the series race at Watkins Glen International Speedway last August; Mark Durgin, 2003 Busch North Series Rookie of the Year Runner Up; fellow 2003 Rookie of the Year candidate Laine Chase; Carey Heath and Travis Benjamin will also be driving into town for the event.

Dozens of crewmembers, NASCAR officials and racers from other series and tracks will also participate.

Event organizer and Busch North Scene publisher George “Soup” Campbell says the chance to mingle with the long list of race car driving A-listers is the biggest draw of the event.

For BNS drivers, though, it’s a chance to get together in the offseason.

After registering at the Rangeley Inn, snowmobilers hit the trails together, stopping at checkpoints at Rangeley and Oquossoc businesses including Rev It Up Sports, Niboban Camps, The Four Seasons Cafe, Oquossoc Marine and Aubuchon Hardware.

At each stop, Campbell said, riders will get a sticker placed on their credential card. At the end of the ride, they turn that card in and get five poker cards.

The poker run costs $10 a ticket, and 50 percent of proceeds will benefit the Maine Multiple Sclerosis Society. The remaining money will be given to charities, including Maine Special Olympics and the Busch North/NASCAR Ladies Auxiliary.

Between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. Bessey and Santerre will sign autographs and meet race fans at Aubuchon Hardware. The No. 6 Aubuchon Hardware Chevrolet will be on display in front of the store throughout the day.

After the sun sinks behind Saddleback, the day’s events really get into gear and fans will get a chance to party alongside their favorite drivers at the Rangeley Inn.

Hundreds of items have been donated for an auction and raffle, including some coveted race tickets, NASCAR gear and even an NFL cap signed by commissioner Paul Tagliabue and a Super Bowl 38 program.

Entertainment, free with a poker run credential, starts at 8 p.m. with a performance by comedians Rob Steen and Joe Carroll, followed by a concert from the band, Maine Street.

The evening entertainment is also open to the public with a cover charge at the door.
