JAY – Two of the vents that control air at the elementary school have either been replaced or repaired. One is in the reading room, the other in the art room.

Some complaints are still being received from staff members and students about not feeling well, Principal Beverly Gillespie said Tuesday.

She is sending all students to the nurse to determine if those with complaints are sick from cold or flu symptoms or air quality.

Gillespie said she expected an air specialist to check the building that afternoon.

The vent that was repaired is going to be replaced, she said.

Forty-three students and staff members at the school had complained Jan. 16 of symptoms varying from burning eyes to nausea.

A check of a bathroom in the first-grade wing showed an initial low-level reading of carbon monoxide. Because it was a windy day, the bathroom vent was turned on and the next reading showed no trace of carbon monoxide.

On Jan. 20 and 21, some students and staff members still complained of symptoms.

A check of the building showed an exhaust fan that circulates air in the first-grade wing was broken.

The problem turned out to be carbon dioxide and not carbon monoxide.
