TURNER – The SAD 52 Adult and Community Education winter/spring catalog is available and many of the classes start the week of Feb. 9.
Residents can choose from biology with lab, math, U.S. history, government, world studies, chemistry with lab, English as a Second Language, English, French or Spanish for Beginners I and II.
The Readers Book Club, featuring a biweekly discussion of books, old and new, is new this year. The first meeting will be held on Thursday, Feb. 12, when the first book will be chosen.
The art/science of creating sacred spaces at many levels, from desk, to bedroom, to the backyard, will be explored. The class will introduce sacred sites around the world, how to make a labyrinth or stone circle and how to dowse for water or energy.
In Earrings for Fun participants will learn the basics of making earrings from beads, seed and fishing lures.
How to Buy Stocks without a Broker is designed for long-term investing. Students will learn to control investment expenses and how to get started.
A Field Course in Antique Houses, a six-week session, will include information on what to look for when restoring a house and making sure it is structurally sound.
Computer classes will include the Windows operating system, introductory level Microsoft Access and Excel. There will be a beginning computer course and word processing.
Residents can learn the basic fundamentals of welding or take a small engine repair class or woodworking.
The Maine Guide School will prepare students for the oral and written exams to become a guide in the hunting, fishing and recreation classification.
The course will also include practical exercise in map and compass reading and a lost-person scenario.
There will be a variety of CPR classes plus American Red Cross first aid sessions.
Movement and physical fitness classes will include hatha yoga, gym use for walking and jogging, gentle movement, tae kwon do for grades four through six, karate for grades seven through 12, meditation and golf for beginners.
Creative courses will include beginning basket weaving, raku pottery, scrapbooking, creating a Valentine’s Day card, make a wall pocket of dried flowers, beginning knitting and crocheting and quilting.
A Gardens – Get Them Ready class will teach how to grow herbs in the home or garden with tips to starting seeds, transplanting seedlings and harvesting herbs. In the All Season Garden Design class, participants will learn how to combine texture, color and line to create a garden from early spring until late fall.
An Antiques and Collectibles Night will be held on Tuesday, May 4. It will offer an opportunity to have two antiques and collectibles appraised.
A two-hour Caregiver Guidance and Resource Seminar will help shed light on coverage for care in the home, Medicare, MaineCare, long-term care insurance and other community resources. Hunter, gun and ATV safety classes will be offered.
