RUMFORD – The final score certainly wasn’t indicative of the battled waged in the Class C Western regional championship as Lisbon topped Dirigo, 224-202, Saturday.
The Greyhounds’ Mark Stambach actually clinched it by pinning the Cougars’ Pat O’Leary in the 189-pound final.
A total team barrage had given Dirigo an 11-point lead entering the finals. The lead evaporated as Lisbon scored 42 unanswered points by winning the first six individual crowns. The Greyhounds have won four-straight regional crowns and the last three state titles.
Dirigo finished second again as it qualified 14 wrestlers for the state meet next week.
“I couldn’t have asked for any thing more,” Dirigo coach Doug Gilbert said. “All of the kids worked hard. It wasn’t anything like last week when we bottomed out in the semifinals. At the beginning of the season, if some one had told me that we’d be leading entering the regional finals, I would have been surprised. The kids believed in themselves.”
Lisbon advanced 11 athletes to the finals and received victories by Tyler Clark (103), Justin Cornell (112), Charlie Stambach (119), Tim Swell (125), Nate Hix (130), Derek Giusto (135), Mitch Harmon (145), Josh Dubois (152) and Mark Stambach.
The finals started with a bang with three of the six head-to-head matches between the Greyhounds and Cougars. Tyler Clark cradled Josh Ronan and Charlie Stambach stuck Aaron Patenaude. Cornell executed a two-point near fall with four seconds left to decision Mike Jonaitis.
“The match at 112 was really big” Gilbert said. “It gave Lisbon the momentum, but I’m still extremely satisfied. We have 13 underclassmen coming back who qualified in the regional. There was one senior in the lineup.”
Swell and Harmon both pinned Monmouth (third, 92 points) teammates Wes Danforth and Dennis Trask placed third at 125 and 145, respectively. The Mustangs’ Kyle Fox (171) was stuck by Dirigo senior Kyle Dolloff who had been sidelined with a knee injury.
The Cougars’ Nate Carrier, Kyle Meile and Devin Brann each placed third at 135, 145 and 152, respectively.
Dubois pinned Mike Emry of Traip and Lisbon had the advantage. Randy Hall (160) won a major decision against Ian McKeague.
“There wasn’t much else that we could have done,” Lisbon coach Mark Stevens said. “We only lost one match all day, but scoring becomes a factor in a tournament like this. But you really have to credit Dirigo because those kids really rose up and that’s the sign of some good coaching.”
The Cougars’ Brent Carter won at 140 and Nate Conley rallied for a 12-8 decision over Ted Stadmueler of Hyde at 215. In the final match, Al Lawrence of Wiscasset stuck Keith Ellis (275) of Dirigo.
