More than two dozen attended a public hearing Thursday.

MEXICO – Plans for continuing the annual Fourth of July celebrations took another step forward Thursday evening.

More than two dozen people attended a public hearing held by the River Valley Chamber of Commerce at Mountain Valley Middle School in Mexico. The chamber sought to gauge community support for the fireworks shows and other activities that have become a tradition.

Some chamber members said there would have to be some changes to this year’s program, but they were encouraged by a strong show of interest in keeping the tradition alive.

“It was good to see people step forward and take the initiative,” said member Tammy Lyons.

Past celebrations, including games, car shows, carnivals, business vendors and music acts, were organized by the Moontide Water Festival Committee and occurred over several days. When the committee announced that it could no longer sponsor the event, the chamber offered to try and continue at least some parts of the celebration.

Lyons said the chamber will host a meeting Saturday, Feb. 6, at its office in Rumford. The meeting is for people who want to help plan this year’s festivities. Members of the previous Moontide Committee will be in attendance to help with event planning.

“The Board of Directors needs a meeting to see what kinds of activities we can have,” said Lyons. She added that the chamber has a sign-up sheet for people or businesses interested in participating in this year’s celebrations. For more information phone 364-3241.
